cheap mahjong set gets the job doneFeb 18, 2008
By Charlyn Gee You can play mahjong with this set of tiles. It's a complete set (144 tiles + 4 spares + 4 jokers). It has Western indices (numbers/letters) in the corners. It even includes the dice, wind indicators, and betting sticks you need to play. There's nothing wrong with it functionally.
However, be warned: the tiles look cheap.
The inking is not very precise so most of the tiles look 'blurry' where the ink overruns the engraving (looks like someone 'colored outside the lines'). And some of the tiles have ink smears on them. Personally this bothers me a lot. They look so low-quality.
So... if you need 'something, anything' to play mahjong with, this set is fine. Or if you already have a nice set and are looking for a cheap second set. But I would not give this set to someone as a gift, and it's nothing you'd want to show off to friends.
Other info: There is a rulebook included, but it is written in very poor English and is almost impossible to understand. Don't use it if you're new and trying to learn.
The tiles are 1 3/16 x 7/8 x 1/2 inches. The backs are made of bamboo, the fronts are white (plastic or bone, I think). The tiles are lighter (less dense) than ones that are made of all plastic.

A great, traditional game in a very durable packageOct 28, 2011
By Richard Staats Mah Jong is a rummy like Chinese game that uses tiles rather than cards.
Originally this was a betting game, but over the last two hundred years it has become a more family, friendly game.
You can play it at varying levels of complexity.
I've played this as a rummy like game just using the four basic suits with younger children, and I used to play Mah Jong as a matching game variant in overseas assignments. When the mutual language skills were limited on both sides, communicating about matches was a great way to play together while not getting too worried about missing nuances that would embarass or frustrate one side or the other.
Then, by adding rules selectively, you can add to the game.
This set is very robust, and I gave away many copies as gifts.
The pieces are heavy and put up with a lot of abuse (including being accidentially run through an industrial grade washing facility more than once).
[Now, why one of my soldiers had one of these pieces in his pockets is another interesting question ... but, best not to think too hard on that! ;-)]
I highly recommend this game as a gift or a family favorite.
In service,
Rich The Original Dr. Games since 1993

Not worth the money..Apr 21, 2011

If you are looking for a "good" mahjong set, this is not it. The quality of this product is poor and not worth the money. The tiles are very light, scratchy, and simply cheesy. Even my 13-year old refused to play with this set. I returned it to Amazon and was dissappointed that I had to pay back a fee for returning something that didn't meet my satisfaction. After this dissapointing ordeal, I shopped around at my local International District/China Town and found better sets in several local Asian vendors for a price that was only a little bit more than this one.
Nice SetJan 07, 2012
By C. Gunn I bought this for my niece, who wanted to start to play Mah Jong. She loves it! The case is very nice and durable, and the tiles are very pretty.

Mah Jong GameFeb 22, 2011
By Shar-pei99 I bought this Mah Jong game as a gift for the family at Christmas. We really haven't had a chance to play it much. But it is beautiful and we hope to try it soon.
