Just JUNKNov 17, 2010
By Bill Rocks

This chess set arrived today as a Christmas Present for my son and I am too embarrassed to give it to him even an 11 year old will know it is just junk! The striped wood on one side of the folding board is made out of an entirely different kind of wood than the wood on the other side. So it looks like it was put together in two different factories in China, like one hand didn't know what the other hand was doing. Mis-matched. I mean it looks really weird, not just a little bit off.
Also, this board is advertised as 16 inches, which is misleading. The playing surface itself is only 12 inches and the pieces are extremely small as you would expect for a 12 inch set. But I thought I was paying up for a 16 inch set with bigger pieces. Sure, the exterior case & handle measures 16, but the playing surface is 12.
OK so for 20 dollars it is cheap so expectations are so low that it is OK it is junk?
No, was not expecting something actually going in the scrap heap! Don't buy!

Poor quality chess pieces and boardMar 16, 2010

Board does not shut properly and cheap construction. Pieces strongly smelled of finish that had not had time to dry properly.

Very nice for the priceMar 24, 2010

Wanted to get a decent chess set for my son and this turned out to be just right. Reasonable well built. Pieces are a bit light but not bad. The retainer for the pieces when stored is a bit flimsy (an banded elastic) and I expect this to be a problem some day but for now it works.

What do you expect?Feb 18, 2011

Some people have submitted very bad reviews for this chess set and board. To them, I have to ask, "What do you expect for $20?" The wood of the board is very attractive, the pieces are heavy enough to manage easily and they're a good match for the size of the board. You can buy better sets; you can pay as much as you want, into the hundreds of dollars, but if just want play and learn, this is a convenient and attractive $20 set!
