Excellent, though imperfectFeb 09, 2010
By P. Danko I bought this because my 10-year-old son has shown an interest in chess and I thought having the large board always out would encourage us to play frequently. That has turned out to be the case. Success! The table is sturdy and attractive. The drawers hold all the pieces (chess and checkers). The only thing that keeps me from giving the game five stars is that the pieces are a bit sloppily made. From across the room they look great, but when you sit down at the board you notice that many of the cuts are choppy and imprecise. And one of our knights arrived doctored clumsily with plastic wood on top, apparently to fix a hole. Obviously this doesn't create functional problems. But for well over $100, a higher level of quality on the pieces might reasonably be expected.

Fun Family TableJan 24, 2010
By Andrew G. Galles I bought this for Christmas as a family gift after my 8 and 9 year old were playing it a local business. It is very well made and the large wooden pieces make it a decorative piece as well. The kids love learning how to play chess with it. Would definately recommend this piece.

Recommended when shipped properlyAug 17, 2011
By P.Ilou After repairing for several hours this broken table broken from poor packaging used for shipment, I am satisfied of this massive conversation piece if I may say. It gathers attention when I receive visitors in my living room. The wood for the chess pieces is heavy, to my taste, with enough carved (crude) details too.
The checkers pieces included are disappointing in comparison. The dark checkers pieces are not really black.
The top of the table is a mosaic of wooden squares with spaces in between (one broke loose / was lost during shipment...I had to make a new one).
This space between the mosaic of square tiles, I found, needed to be filled/glued because if some liquid falls by accident between the 64 wooden tiles it will seep through and likely ruin the table. I used commercial carpenter's glue in several repeated applications because the glue shrinks and flows down as it dries (would clear liquid epoxy have been better/nicer?).
Some white square tiles on the table top are not smooth/not well sanded and the felt under the checkers or chess pieces grips/drags unevenly when one pushes a piece for a play. This is rather unpleasant and distracts from play; makes the set less luxurious.
The underside of the table is made of MDF; the drawers are made of wood and lined with green felt.
One leg did not tightly fit in its corner even after tightening the screw; workmanship could be better. The leg gap left could be filled with LePage carpenter's glue too...I have used 200mL so far on this table.
